pyRouterJig A woodworking layout tool for creating box and dovetail joints

Installation

Windows and Mac

Pre-compiled binaries for Windows and Mac (thanks to PyInstaller) are available on the home page. For Windows, clicking on the Download for Windows button will download the pyRouterJig.exe file, double-click on it, and the program should run. This executable is 32-bit and has been tested on Windows 7, 10, and XP.

For Mac, clicking on the Download for Mac will download the pyRouterJig.app.zip file. Unzip this file by double-clicking on it, which should create the folder pyRouterJig.app. Double-clicking on this folder should start the application. I have tested pyRouterJig on Mac versions 10.9.x and 10.11.x. This app is 64-bit and other Mac versions should work, as long as you have 10.5.x or later.

Please let me know if you have issues with these executables.

Installation from source

This approach may be a challenge unless you are familiar working with Python, the language that pyRouterJig uses. To obtain the source code for a release, go to the github release site, download either the .zip or .tar.gz file (your preference), and decompress the file. This should create a folder pyRouterJig-X.X.X, where X.X.X is the release number. In this folder, the script pyRouterJig.py should start the application, if you happen to already satisfy the prerequisites below.

pyRouterJig depends upon the following Python packages, which must be installed in order to run pyRouterJig:

  • Python. Python is installed by default on the Mac, but I use a different installation, discussed below.
  • PyQt4. This package is used as the graphical user interface (GUI).
  • Python-Future, which is used so that pyRouterJig works for both python 2.7 and 3.5 (these are the versions that I have tested; intermediate versions should work also)

I install all of these packages using Anaconda, which is also available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. I highly recommend Anaconda, as the packages above may have other dependencies that Anaconda also takes care of installing. Depending on how you install Anaconda, PyQt4 may not install PyQt4 by default. Regardless, enter the command

conda install pyqt

in a Command Prompt (Windows) or Terminal.app (Mac) window and assuming conda is in your path. If pyqt has already been installed, then conda tells you so; no harm done. Similarly, to install future, do

conda install future

With the prerequisites above satisfies, and python or python.exe in your path, in the source folder on any platform you should be able to type in a terminal

./pyRouterJig.py

or on Windows

.\pyRouterJig.py

and the application should start.
